Nominating new members - honorary and distinction grades

Election to Membership or Fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) via the distinction or honorary routes is the way FPH recognises those who have made a significant contribution to one or more of the following areas:

  • to the science, literature or practice of public health
  • to raising the profile of public health
  • to the work of FPH itself

Each year, we ask our Fellows to nominate outstanding individuals to join FPH. They can be public health professionals or those who do not work in typical public health settings such as police and fire services, housing and education, sports and leisure, social care and community pharmacy. We encourage nominations for people who live and/or work outside the UK as we value the broad range of expertise and experience these colleagues bring to the public health family.

Nominations are invited for the following categories of membership:

  • Practitioner Membership through Distinction
  • Membership through Distinction
  • Fellowship through Distinction
  • Honorary Membership
  • Honorary Fellowship

Each membership grade carries its own post-nominals.

Self-applications for distinction and honorary grades of membership are not accepted.

Nomination process

Proposals must be supported by two FPH Fellows in good standing.  Proposers are required to complete a nomination form with details of how their nominee has made a significant contribution to public health and how awarding them membership may benefit the Faculty. The nomination form is available to FPH Fellows on the FPH members portal. Nominations will only be accepted on this form.

Nominations open on Wednesday 1 November 2023 and will close on Monday 11 December 2023.

Detailed guidance on the nomination process can be found here.

When will I find out if my nomination has been successful?

Nominations will be considered at a meeting of the Fellowship Committee early in the new year. Its recommendations will be presented to the FPH Board for approval in March.

Proposers will be notified of the outcome of their nomination in mid-late March. At the same time, successful nominees will receive an offer of membership and will be formally admitted to the Faculty of Public Health at its annual general meeting in June.

Those nominees who do not meet the criteria for the category for which they have been nominated may be offered another grade of membership.
