Understanding the political causes of health inequalities

20 Jun - 20 Jun 2023

Virtual, Online event

Time:

12:00-13:00 UK

Description:

Expert discussion presenting an overview of political causes of health inequalities in Scotland, the UK and beyond.

Staffordshire University’s Centre for Health and Development (CHAD) and the Faculty of Public Health have collaborated on an annual health and inequalities conference since 2018. For this academic year we are hosting a series of bimonthly webinars around health and social inequalities.

We are delighted to invite you to the fifth webinar in this series. This webinar will present an overview of population health and health inequalities in Scotland (and the UK), and show evidence of the political drivers of those inequalities, using four specific (and brief) case studies: deindustrialisation and health in Europe; excess mortality in Glasgow ; austerity and mortality in the UK; and drug deaths in Scotland. Solutions to health inequalities will also be discussed.

You will hear from Dr David Walsh who is the Public Health Programme Manager for Glasgow Centre for Population Health (GCPH). He has been responsible for many different research programmes including a large body of work aimed at understanding Scotland's high levels of 'excess' mortality, studies of deindustrialisation and health across European regions and solutions to health inequalities. This one hour-session will include:

  • Chair's welcome
  • Discussion around political causes of health inequalities and the political drivers: Dr David Walsh, Public Health Programme Manager for GCPH
  • Q&A
  • Chair's concluding remarks

Details on how to join the online event will be emailed to all those who register in advance.
