The role of the Advocacy & Policy Committee is to:

• Support the FPH Board, President and Officers in setting the strategic direction on matters relating to public health policy and advocacy
• Provide analysis of the external environment and propose key priorities for public health policy engagement
• Act as a decision-making body to ensure clear lines of accountability, for example in relation to:
  • Consultation responses
  • Appointment of FPH representatives on external bodies
  • Statements and publications
  • Endorsement of other publications and events
  • Appointment of FPH members as policy spokespeople

The Board meets five times a year and is responsible for:

• The strategic direction of the Faculty, including developing and agreeing its strategy on public health issues
• Acting as an authoritative body for the purposes of consultation and advocacy on matters of education or public interest concerning public health
• Maintaining the highest possible levels of professional competence and practice by its members through oversight of the training, education and revalidation arrangements and the review and setting of standards

The Climate and Health Committee is responsible for leading the Faculty’s response on issues of sustainability, climate change and biodiversity loss in public health and formulate and approve relevant policy.

The Curriculum & Assessment Committee is responsible for managing and overseeing the work of the curriculum and assessment systems on behalf of the Faculty’s Education Committee.

The CPD Advisers Committee provides strategic direction, guidance and support on the development and improvement of the FPH CPD scheme. It ensures, through work on developing systems within the Faculty and its membership, that the highest standards of public health practice are attained and maintained.

The Diplomate Examination Development Committee oversees the Diplomate Examination, ensuring it is fit for purpose and satisfies the standards as laid out by the regulators (the General Medical Council and the UK Public Health Registrar). It is responsible for the development of the examination, including structure, format, policy and aims.

The Education Committee is responsible for initiating, delivering and encouraging education in public health, and for monitoring and maintaining the high quality of standards for training and examination in the specialty up to specialist registration.

It has specific responsibilities for:

• Assessment - including examinations and providing guidance and standards on workplace-based assessment
• Training - including setting and maintaining the curriculum for public health specialty training, determining entry requirements into specialty training, making recommendations on inclusion on the specialist registers for those with appropriate qualifications and training
• General education - including advising on educational issues, practitioner development and overseeing the FPH strategy for training and courses

The Ethics Committee provides a focus for ethical analysis, consideration and response to public health challenges and issues, and advises and supports the Faculty in further embedding ethical principles and understanding into its activities, policies, practice and governance.

The Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee provides a focus for action to embed equality, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the Faculty’s work. It also ensures that the Faculty meets its legal and ethical requirements in relation to EDI.

The Executive manages the business of the Faculty. It oversees the implementation of the Faculty’s strategy and agrees the operational plan and budget, prior to final approval by the Board. It has delegated authority from the Board to undertake:

• The effective allocation and management of resources, in line with the Faculty’s strategic priorities
• Safe management and stewardship of the Faculty’s assets
• Monitoring and improving performance and accountability
• Protecting and enhancing the Faculty’s reputation
• Ensuring it adequately represents the interests of the UK countries, English regions and overseas members in its deliberations.

The Faculty Advisers Committee is responsible for overseeing the Faculty’s role in the appointment of senior public health staff, ensuring that there are appropriate up-to-date policies and guidance for FPH advisers, assessors and employers.

The Global Health Committee aims to contribute actively to the improvement of global health through the organised efforts of FPH members by:

The Health Improvement Committee acts a source of advice and expertise on all public health aspects relating to health improvement. It works to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities by advocating for an environment that supports healthy lifestyle choices and by addressing underlying issues such as poverty, lack of educational opportunities, and other social determinants of health and inequalities. Its remit includes non-communicable diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, and cancer resulting from determinants such as poor nutrition, lack of physical activity and tobacco or alcohol users.

The Health Protection Committee acts as a source of advice and expertise on health protection policies and issues, including: communicable disease control and delivery of national, regional and local health protection services; control of biological, chemical and other environmental hazards; emergency planning and preparedness; and the effects of climate change.

The Health Services Committee advocates to drive improvements in population outcomes and reductions in health inequalities in a cost effective manner. It focuses on developing and improving evidence-based healthcare, including assessment and planning of health need, prevention, quality (safety, outcomes and good patient experience), efficiency (good outcomes per £ spent), value (that the patient or population derive), variation, and equity in health and social care pathways.

The Remuneration & Appointments Committee determines policy on the remuneration and terms of employment of FPH staff and oversees the appointment and election of trustees and lay members of the Board.

The Specialty Registrars Committee represents the interests of specialty registrars in public health from across the UK, ensuring the views of registrars are heard at other FPH committees. The Workforce Committee is responsible for monitoring and maintaining all relevant public health workforce issues and the high quality of standards and good practice in the specialty. It has specific responsibilities for:
